CALGARY – With the 42nd Annual Night of the Dino less than two weeks away, the University of Calgary Dinos are pleased to announce the nominees for major athletic awards for the 2008-09 varsity season.

The award winners will be announced at the Night of the Dino gala on Tuesday, March 31 at the Red & White Club, McMahon Stadium.

After a season which saw the Dinos bring home 12 championships – two CIS, seven Canada West, and three ACAC – there was no shortage of deserving athletes for the Dr. Dennis Kadatz Athlete of the Year and Bill Popplewell Rookie of the Year awards. The selection committee pared down the field to five nominees each for the male and female athletes of the year, and three each for the rookies of the year.

The nominees for athlete of the year will each receive an Award of Merit at the Night of the Dino. The athlete of the year awards are named after Dr. Dennis Kadatz, the first football coach and first athletic director at the University of Calgary.

The nominees for the Dr. Dennis Kadatz female athlete of the year are Heidi Erdle (wrestling), Holly Harper (volleyball), Hanna Kubas (swimming), Heather Sim (cross country / track and field), and Katie Urness (hockey).

Ross Bekkering (basketball), Andrea Bonaventura (football), Sam Effah (track and field), Travis Friedley (hockey), and Matt Walter (football) are the nominees for the Dr. Dennis Kadatz male athlete of the year award.

The rookie of the year awards are named after Mr. Bill Popplewell, a longtime supporter of the Dinos during his time with Husky Energy – one of the Dinos’ longest-standing corporate partners.

The female rookie of the year nominees are Shelby Davey (hockey), Erica Morningstar (swimming), and Ali Sandholm (volleyball). Chris Hoag (volleyball), Brock Nixon (hockey), and Andy Rochon (basketball) make up the male nominees.

Other awards to be handed out at the Night of the Dino include the Dr. Lou Goodwin and Marg Southern service awards, the Murray Fraser volunteer awards, the Calgary Booster Club Scholar-Athlete awards, the Vereburn Athletic Therapy scholarships, and the Gauntlet Extra Effort awards.
