OTTAWA – Fifth-year University of Calgary Dinos forward Ross Bekkering has earned a spot on the second All-Canadian team for the second straight season.

The award, announced Thursday night at the CIS All-Canadian Reception in advance of the Final 8 national championship tournament, follows a similar nod in 2008-09 for Bekkering, who will wrap up his stellar career with the Dinos at Scotiabank Place this weekend.

Seventh-seeded Calgary takes on No. 2 Cape Breton, the Atlantic champions, in the first game of the tournament. Quarterfinal action gets underway at 12:30 p.m. local (10:30 a.m. MT), and the game will be broadcast live on SSNCanada.ca.

Calgary native Josh Whyte of the UBC Thunderbirds earned the evening’s highest honour, taking home the Mike Moser Trophy as the CIS Player of the Year.

Other CIS major award winners announced during the All-Canadian Banquet at the Marriott Hotel in Ottawa were Cape Breton forward Phillip Nkrumah of Malton, Ont., who was named the nation’s top defensive player; Brock guard Clinton Springer-Williams of London, Ont., who received the Dr. Peter Mullins trophy as rookie of the year; UBC’s Kevin Hanson of Vancouver, who captured a second Stuart W. Aberdeen memorial trophy as coach of the year; and Dalhousie’s Andrew Sullivan of Riverview, N.B., who received the Ken Shields award recognizing his excellence in basketball, academics and community involvement.

Bekkering closes his career as the sixth-best scorer (1,424 points) and the all-time leading rebounder (914) in University of Calgary history. He is just the third player in school history to receive two All-Canadian selections, joining Richard Bohne and Karl Tilleman as players with that distinction.
