Calgary in the running to host three CIS Championships

| By:
CALGARY – The University of Calgary has thrown its hat in the ring to host three Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship events over the next five years.

CIS announced the full list of bidders Tuesday morning after receiving 34 bids for 13 different CIS championships for the 2011-2015 time period.

The Dinos, already hosts of the 2011 CIS Swimming Championships next spring, bid to host the national tournaments in women's basketball (2011, 2012), men's hockey (2013, 2014), and men's volleyball (2014, 2015).

In women's basketball, the 2011 championship is up for grabs after CIS made changes to the tournament format. The championship model will now see three four-team regional tournaments, with the three winners advancing to a Final 8 with the four conference champions plus the host team. Calgary is up against the University of Alberta and the University of Windsor for the 2011 event, while Regina and Windsor have also bid to host women's basketball in 2012.

The Dinos have hosted the CIS women's basketball championship three times, most recently in 1994. Calgary also hosted the event in 1977 and 1978.

In men's hockey, there was significant interest from Canada West schools in hosting the University Cup with no fewer than four bids from the west in the mix. In addition to conference opponents Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Regina, Calgary is up against Dalhousie and Nipissing for the right to host the 2013 and 2014 University Cups.

Calgary has hosted the event twice in its history, once in a joint hosting agreement with the University of Alberta in 1967 and again in 1981. The University Cup was last in western Canada in 2005 and 2006 when hosted by Edmonton, while Saskatoon hosted for three years from 1998-2000.

Calgary's final bid came in the sport of men's volleyball for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The defending national champion Dinos will battle with Saskatchewan and Toronto for hosting rights in both 2014 and 2015, while Brandon University bid for 2014 only. The Dinos have hosted the men's volleyball tournament five times: 1970, 1989, and 1996-98.

The CIS selection committee will meet in late June to work its way through the selection process, and successful bids will be announced within 48 hours of the final decision.
