EDMONTON – The Canada West Universities Athletic Association announced Monday the results of the inaugural pre-season football coaches' poll, and the two-time defending champion University of Calgary Dinos are the unanimous choice to finish atop the conference yet again.
The Dinos, who fell 33-31 to the Queen's Gaels in the 2009 Vanier Cup, received the maximum five first-place votes in the poll. Voting was based on a 7-5-3-2-1 system, and coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.
Saskatchewan was the unanimous choice for second place with 27 points, followed by Manitoba, UBC, Regina, and Alberta.
The first official rankings of the 2010 season will be announced Tuesday morning by Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
The 2010 Canada West football season kicks off on Friday night when the Manitoba Bisons visit the Regina Rams. Action continues Saturday with Alberta visiting UBC for a matinee, followed by the marquee match-up of the week as Calgary takes on Saskatchewan in a rematch of last year's classic Hardy Cup final. Kickoff goes at 7 p.m. at McMahon Stadium, live on Shaw TV and AM 770 CHQR.
Season tickets for Dinos football are on sale until Tuesday at all Calgary Co-op customer service locations for just $25.
