CALGARY – The Lamar Cardinals wrapped up the 2011 Battle of the Border tournament in style Thursday night, handing the host Calgary Dinos a 106-69 defeat in the Jack Simpson Gym.
One night after defeating the same Dinos 115-79, Lamar rode a 32-point effort by senior guard Mike James, who shot a spectacular 12-16 (.750) from the field. The Cardinals built up their lead in the first half, outscoring the Dinos 38-15 in the second quarter alone.
Calgary improved in the second half, winning the third quarter 24-20 and keeping the fourth respectable in being outscored 25-20.

Tyler Fidler led the Dinos with a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double, while sophomore point guard
Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson scored 12 to go with eight boards.
IN the tournament finale, the Alberta Golden Bears put up a game effort against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, falling 79-62 to the Murfreesboro, Tenn.-based squad.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT RECAP...
The Lamar Cardinals put on an offensive show in the second half, putting up 65 points to cruise to an 115-79 whitewash of the Calgary Dinos Wednesday night at the Jack Simpson Gym to wrap up Day 2 of the 2011 Battle of the Border tournament.
Lamar's victory, coupled with Middle Tennessee's earlier 92-61 win over Alberta, improved the NCAA's record to 4-0 at the tournament. Proceedings come to a close Thursday with three games, highlighted by the Calgary-Lamar rematch at 5:30 p.m. MT. Middle Tennessee wraps up the tournament against Alberta at 8 p.m.
The Dinos were outmatched on the glass all night, with Lamar hauling down 24 offensive boards against 20 of the defensive variety for Calgary. The Cardinals, led by a 26-point night from Mike James and 23 more from Devon Lamb, shot 55 per cent in the second half and nearly 54 on the night, attempting 84 field goals against just 47 for the Dinos.
Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson had a fantastic night in a losing cause for the Dinos, shooting 9-of-11 from the field and scoring 30.
Tyler Fidler added 19 for the Dinos before fouling out with just under five minutes to go in the fourth.
In the early game Wednesday, Marcos Knight put up 22 points to lead the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders to a 92-61 triumph over the Alberta Golden Bears. Alberta led by as many as six points in the second quarter before a 17-0 run by Middle Tennessee put an end to that in a spurt that saw the Raiders outscore the Bears 51-28 in the middle two quarters. Jason Jones added 15 points for Middle Tennessee, while LaRon Dendy potted 11.
Alberta was led by Adam Weir's 18-point effort, while Sahr Saffa added 13 and Nikola Manojlovic 10.
TUESDAY NIGHT RECAP...
In early-season non-conference basketball action Tuesday night in the Jack Simpson Gym, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders used an 18-11 advantage in the fourth quarter to defeat the Calgary Dinos 71-58.
Led by a 14-point effort by transfer senior LaRon Dendy, the Blue Warriors embarked on a 13-0 run early in the fourth quarter to seal the affair after the Dinos had pulled within a single point late in the first. Middle Tennessee, which plays in the NCAA's Sun Belt Conference, moves to 1-0 at the annual Battle of the Border tournament.
Matt Letkeman led the Dinos with 12 points on the night, with
Tyler Fidler adding 11 and
Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson contributing 10 for Calgary (0-1).
In the early game Tuesday, the Lamar Cardinals (Beaumont, Texas) defeated the University of Alberta Golden Bears 88-62. Mike James led Lamar with 20 points, while Stan Brown added 17. Todd Bergen-Henengouwen was the leading scorer for the Golden Bears with 18 points.
The Battle of the Border continues Wednesday when Middle Tennessee takes on Alberta at 5:30 p.m., followed by Calgary and Lamar at 8 p.m. The tournament wraps up Thursday night.
