Editor's note: Dinos women's basketball forward Alex Cole is blogging about her experiences during the team's trip to Tijuana, Mexico to build a house for a needy family.
Working with Youth With A Mission, the team will build a house Sept. 1-2, run a basketball clinic for local children on Sept. 3, and visit an orphanage on Sept. 4. They return to Calgary on Sept. 5.
DAY 1 - August 31
Greetings from Mexico!
We arrived in Tijuana after a 45 minute drive from the San Diego airport. We made it over the border with no problems. It was interesting to see the difference in scenery as soon as we crossed the border. In San Diego everything seemed to be big and flashy and when we crossed into Mexico we witnessed a substantial amount of poverty.
When we arrived at our YWAM base we took advantage of our free time and went to the ocean.
Later at dinner we were shown a video about the Homes for Hope program which was meant to give us an idea of what to expect on our build. The video was very heart warming, and it was amazing to see what a difference this program can make to a persons life.
We get to start our build at 8:30 am tomorrow and all of us can't wait !
