Cole's Notes - Basketball is a universal language

Editor's note: Dinos women's basketball forward Alex Cole is blogging about her experiences during the team's trip to Tijuana, Mexico to build a house for a needy family.

Working with Youth With A Mission, the team will build a house Sept. 1-2, run a basketball clinic for local children on Sept. 3, and visit an orphanage on Sept. 4. They return to Calgary on Sept. 5.

DAY 4 - September 3
Today we put on a basketball camp for the local kids in the neighborhood where we originally built the house. It was a held at an outdoor court that was built by the government.  Most of the inhabitants of the neighborhood (300 families) were placed here by the government after their original community flooded, so there were tons of kids that came to play!

We had about 40 kids end up coming and we split them into groups from kindergarten to grade six.  Before we began, Megan S., Jessica F., and Tamara all stood up in front of the group and explained to all of the kids how sports have impacted their lives. The younger kids were just interested in being picked up and swung around but the older half of the group played relay games and bump.

We played a full court game and all the kids watched and then were given a chance to join in and play against us.  All the kids were ecstatic to be there with us and I wish we could have stayed longer to play with them.  Some parents and grandparents came to watch and the end of the camp they gave us hugs and thanked us profusely for coming. It was really cool to be able to interact with the kids, even though they speak Spanish, play is a universal language.

Tomorrow we head to the orphanage in the morning.
