CALGARY – University of Calgary men's basketball forward
Boris Bakovic had a milestone weekend and led his team to a big-time sweep of their archrivals, earning Canada West athlete of the week honours in the process.
With a step-back three-ball early in the fourth quarter Friday night in a 67-66 win over the Alberta Golden Bears, Bakovic passed Saskatchewan's Andrew Spagrud's career scoring mark of 2,182 points – the most ever in the combined histories of AUS, OUA, and Canada West. He finished the weekend with 32 points and now sits at 2,199 for his career.
More importantly for his team, Bakovic was a major factor in Calgary's huge two-game sweep of the Golden Bears. His record-breaking three came during an 18-0 run Friday night that turned a 13-point deficit into a five-point lead, and he made two significant consecutive shot blocks in the final minute to preserve the tight one-point lead for the Dinos. He finished the night with 24 points, adding a game-high 11 rebounds as the Dinos eked out the one-point win.
A night later, he was again a key rebounder with seven as Calgary completed the sweep with a 79-64 win. The sweep may have saved the Dinos' season, as they head to Winnipeg this week to face the Manitoba Bisons – the team they trail by just two games in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot.
A sweep by the Dinos this weekend at Manitoba would all but secure a playoff berth, while a Bisons sweep would eliminate Calgary from postseason competition. The series, a rare Thursday-Friday affair, tips off Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. MT and continues 24 hours later. Both games can be viewed live on CanadaWest.tv.
Dinos women's basketball forward Jessica Franz was named the University of Calgary's female athlete of the week after her strong performance in a two-game sweep of the then-No. 5 Alberta Pandas, one which landed her team in the national rankings for the first time all season. Calgary enters the final two weeks of the campaign ranked No. 10.
