BOX SCORE
CALGARY – The horns and flashing lights that necessitated an evacuation of the Jack Simpson Gym midway through the second quarter Friday night turned out to be a false alarm – but the Wyoming Cowboys set off some pyrotechnics of their own in the second half, blowing open a tight game to defeat the Calgary Dinos 95-67.
The game closed out the 2012 Battle of the Border tournament, with Wyoming returning home with a perfect 3-0 record in tow after previous wins over the Dinos (Tuesday) and Mount Royal (Wednesday).
With the score tied at 36-36 following half time, the Cowboys pulled out the full-court press in the third quarter, throwing the Dinos out of their offensive rhythm and taking command of the game by outscoring their hosts 35-16 in the foul-filled frame. Wyoming scored 29 points off 21 Calgary turnovers on the night and hit on 34 of their 70 field goal attempts for a 48.6 per cent night.
Calgary stuck with the Cowboys for the entire first half, and a three by
Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson as the seconds wound down in the second quarter sent them into the locker room tied at the half. Ogungbemi-Jackson finished tied for the team lead with 11 points, joined by
Nebojsa Kuljic, while
Josh Owen-Thomas put up 10.
Senior Luke Martinez was again the offensive catalyst for Wyoming with 15 points, while Derrious Gilmore chipped in with a dozen. Jason McManamen and Jack Bentz contributed 10 apiece for the Mountain West Conference school.
While Wyoming heads back south to Cheyenne, the Dinos will enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer before classes start in early September. Calgary's 2012-13 Canada West season opens Nov. 2-3 when the Dinos host the Manitoba Bisons in the Jack Simpson Gym.
