OTTAWA – University of Calgary track & field star
Rachel Machin and Regina fifth-year runner Kelly Wiebe have been selected as the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending March 10, 2013.
FEMALE: Rachel Machin, Calgary (track & field)
Rachel Machin had the best meet of her career as a Dino at the CIS Track and Field Championships in Edmonton over the weekend. The third year competed in four events, medaling in every one of them and helped bring home Calgary's fourth national women's track and field title.
Day one saw the third-year student-athlete compete in five different events for the pentathlon. She finished with a silver medal, just shy of the gold, won by teammate
Rachael McIntosh. On the second day of competition, Machin started it off with a silver medal in the 60m hurdles, and capped off the night with her first gold of the meet in the long jump. Her jump of 6.01m was good for first place and a personal best.
On the final day, the Calgary native helped solidify the Dinos team win with a gold in the high jump. Coming in ranked second. She beat out the No. 1 seed with a jump of 1.82, tying a personal best. That night at the banquet, Machin was named Outstanding Athlete of the Meet.
MALE: Kelly Wiebe, Regina (track & field)
Kelly Wiebe capped off his incredible five-year career with a gold medal in the 3000m run on Friday at the 2013 CIS track & field Championships in Edmonton.
Wiebe finished with a time of 8:08.13, placing first with a two-second cushion over second-place Matt Walters of Windsor. The performance gave Wiebe his first CIS track medal of his career, as he didn't compete in 2012 and missed the 2011 meet due to commitments with the national cross country team.
Wiebe also won four Canada West gold medals in the 3,000m during his career. His time with the cross country team was even more impressive, as he was a three-time first-team All-Canadian, a three-time Canada West individual cross country champion, and was the CIS individual champion in last year's race.
Wiebe will be in action next on March 24 with Team Canada at the 2013 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
