CALGARY – Another standout recruit has committed to the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball squad for the 2013-14 season.
Point guard Anmol Mattu signed her letter of intent with women's basketball head coach
Damian Jennings and will take the court with the Dinos in the fall.
"Anmol is going to be an exciting Dino to watch over the next five years,” said the 2012-13 Canada West Coach of the Year. “She epitomizes where the program is going in her leadership skills, desire to continuously improve, her academic focus and the style of basketball she wants to help shape here in Calgary.
"She immediately made an impact on me and I'm looking forward to helping her achieve her performance goals and service the Dinos team."
The Dinos' newest recruit had various options for a chance to play basketball in a post-secondary institution, but ultimately chose the University of Calgary due to a number of factors.
“The main reason I chose Calgary is because Damian promised to challenge me both mentally and physically as a basketball player, thus I am excited to train with him and the Dinos for the next five years,” said Mattu.
“I think Damian's European and international experience will help me become the best player that I can be. The great education at the University of Calgary, along with the amazing coaching, team, and facility, set the university apart from others. Overall, I believe the University of Calgary and the Dinos are the perfect fit for me.”
Mattu hails from the west side of the Rockies in Richmond, B.C. where she started all five years for the Steveston-London Sharks. Making the senior team in just Grade 8, the 5'3'' point guard helped her team become the first Richmond team since 2001 to qualify for the provincial championships, averaging almost 25 points per game and seven assists.
The basketball star also played for the U16 Cadette National Team who placed third at the FIBA World Qualifiers and won back-to-back Richmond Senior Girls Basketball Championships.
Mattu joins previously announced recruits Aimee Wilson (Chestermere High School), Brianna Ghali (William Aberhart HS), Hayli Hinchey (Ross Sheppard HS, Edmonton), and Emily Morales (Sir Winston Churchill HS) as newcomers set to join the Dinos next fall.
