CALGARY – Head coach
Danielle Goyette of the Dinos women's hockey program became the third Canadian woman inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation's Hall of Fame on May 19.
As only the sixth female player in the IIHF Hall of Fame, she joins fellow Canadians Angela James and Geraldine Heaney, who were inducted in 2008.
During her career as a player, Goyette was a scoring star for Canada's national women's team. She competed nine times as a World Championship participant and was a three-time Olympian, winning gold every time except for the 1988 Olympics and the 2005 Worlds. She racked up 114 goals and 105 assists in 172 career games, ranking her fourth all-time in national team points.
“When you think about what you want to leave behind, it's a chance for girls to be able to play hockey and for it to be normal to play hockey,” said Goyette.
The Dinos head coach played in her final game for Canada at the age of 41 in the 2007 world championships. Now, at 47, she will be an assistant coach to Dan Church on the 2014 Olympic women's team.
“I will cherish this moment for a lifetime,” said Goyette.
Other inductees for the 2013 class include Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin, Paul Henderson and Teppo Numminen. Jan-Åke Edvinsson, the General Secretary of the IIHF from 1986 to 2006, was inducted in the builders' category. There are now 189 inductees from 22 countries in the IIHF Hall of Fame.
