SASKATOON – For the second time in four years, a University of Calgary netminder was named the top goalie in CIS men's hockey as
Jacob DeSerres walked away with the award Wednesday night.
DeSerres and teammates
Chris Collins and
Drydn Dow were honoured at Saskatoon's TCU Place ahead of the 2014 University Cup, which begins Thursday. Collins, the Canada West rookie of the year, landed on the national all-rookie team after just losing out for the national rookie of the year award to goaltender Kevin Bailie of Queen's.
With a first-team All-Canadian selection to go with his goaltender of the year award, DeSerres becomes the 24th player in Dinos history to land on the first national all-star team. Collins and Dow, meanwhile, are the sixth and seventh players to be recognized on the all-freshman team by CIS. The three were honoured after the team posted its best record since 1987 and was ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of the second half of the season.
Forward Liam Heelis from Acadia was named the CIS player of the year. Other major awards went to McGill's Ryan McKiernan (top defenceman), UNB's Chris Culligan (sportsmanship), Alberta's Ben Lindemulder (hockey, academics, and community service), and Queen's bench boss Brett Gibson as coach of the year.
GOALTENDER OF THE YEAR: Jacob DeSerres, CalgaryDeSerres follows in the footsteps of former teammate
Dustin Butler and becomes the fifth-straight Canada West puck stopper to win the CIS goaltender of the year award since it was first presented in 2010.
DeSerres, a third-year arts student, played 17 conference games for the Dinos, allowing just 35 goals for a 2.15 goals-against average. He finished the year with a sparkling 13-2-2 record, a .914 save percentage and a trio of shutouts. The Calgary native's 13 wins were the second-highest by a goaltender in the Canada West regular season, while his goals-against average and save percentage both ranked third.
The six-foot-two, 190-pound goalie, who backstopped Saint John to the 2011 Memorial Cup title, was the Canada West-WHL Graduate of the Month for November 2013 when he went 5-0-1 with a 0.67 goals-against average and three shutouts.
"Jake is very deserving of this award," said Calgary head coach
Mark Howell. "He has been consistent from start to finish this year, has played tremendous hockey and helped us win games. He has been a leader and one of the best goaltenders in the league, and it's fitting that he receives this recognition."
The other nominees for top-goalie honours were Evan Mosher of Acadia and Kevin Bailie of Queen's.
ALL-ROOKIE TEAM: Chris Collins & Drydn Dow, CalgaryCollins, a 6-1, 207-pound forward from Calgary, joined the Dinos after a five-year WHL career in Chilliwack and Saskatoon followed by a stint in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Okotoks Oilers. His impact with the Dinos was immediate: he scored 14 points in the month of October alone, helping the Dinos jump out to their best start in recent memory.
He finished the season as the conference's top goal scorer with 19 in 28 games – fifth-best in the nation – and added 17 assists to finish with 36 points, good enough for second in the Canada West scoring race. He led all freshmen in the conference in scoring by 11 points, and he scored five game-winning goals – tops in Canada West and third-best in CIS. For his efforts, he won the University of Alberta Alumni Trophy as the rookie of the year in Canada West men's hockey.
Blueliner Dow joined the Dinos after spending his entire WHL career with the Tri-City Americans. He appeared in 23 games, recoring 12 points and a plus-9 rating in his rookie season – putting him just outside the top 10 in conference rookie scoring despite playing five fewer games than most players in front of him.
