Crowchild Classic just one week from Saddledome date

CALGARY – The Crowchild Classic's annual venture to the Scotiabank Saddledome is just one week away.

Next Thursday, Jan. 15, the University of Calgary Dinos will take on the Mount Royal University Cougars in a hockey doubleheader hosted by the Calgary Flames. Puck drop for the women's game is scheduled for 5 p.m., with the men's game following at 7:45.

Now in its third year, the annual Saddledome event has set attendance records in each of its previous two editions. In 2014, 6,016 fans clad in red and blue packed the lower bowl, setting a new Canadian Interuniversity Sport attendance record for a regular season hockey game.

Much is at stake in the contests. The year-long Crowchild Classic series, a competition between the Dinos and Cougars in all regular season games played between the two schools, has yet to be claimed by either side. The Dinos lead the series 6-4-1 with four games left to play in the 2014-15 competition, and a sweep of the Saddledome games would give the Dinos the coveted Medal for a third consecutive season.

Additionally, the men's game will feature two Top-10 teams in CIS hockey, with the Dinos and Cougars currently locked in a battle for second place in Canada West with just weeks remaining in the regular season. The second-place team will receive a first-round playoff bye and host a conference semi-final in late February.

Dinos fans are encouraged to enter the Saddledome via the west entrance (off the +15 from the LRT) and wear red. Limited free parking will be available in Lot 'A' and the Saddledome parkade on the northeast corner of the building, but regular parking rates at Stampede Park will be in effect.
